Our 15th Anniversary

On May 23, 2013, UCSF hosted a celebration of PBBR’s 15th anniversary at our Mission Bay campus. A packed auditorium of scientists and philanthropists gathered at Genentech Hall for the event, which included a provocative panel discussion on the state of high-risk scientific research. Michael Krasny, host of “Forum” on KQED radio, moderated a lively talk featuring then-Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD; Joe DeRisi, PhD; Anita Sil, MD, PhD; and Nobel laureate Alfred Gilman, MD, PhD. The event also paid tribute to the late Marion O. Sandler, one of PBBR’s founding philanthropic partners and visionaries.

A video tribute in memory of PBBR Founding Philanthropic Partner Marion O. Sandler, who passed away in June 2012.

PBBR Founding Philanthropic Partner Herbert M. Sandler describes the case for philanthropic support of this one-of-a-kind program. Please note: the numbers cited in Mr. Sandler’s remarks have been updated since the date of the event. After 15 years PBBR projects had generated over $1 billion (not $500 million) in subsequent funding for its PIs and produced more than $200 million (not $100 million) to support UCSF research through indirect cost recovery.
